Rentings a Dumpster vs Hiring a Junk Removal Company

Tired of the old junk around your house? Are you about to start a home renovation or clean out? Considering the large equipment needed to remove waste, you’ll want the help of a trash disposal service. The top two choices are a dumpster rental or junk removal service.

In this Trash Talks post we’ll go over the pros and cons of both, and how to choose the right one for your needs.

Choosing a Dumpster Rental or Junk Removal Service in a Snapshot

When Renting a Dumpster Makes Sense

  • You don’t mind filling the roll-off container yourself to save some money.
  • Having the flexibility of filling the bin over time is important (7-day rental periods are typical).
  • You have over 7 cubic yards of junk (2-3 pickup truck loads worth).

When Hiring Junk Removal Experts Makes Sense

  • You want someone to remove the junk from your home for you.
  • The job should be completed within a few hours.
  • You only have a few bulky items to throw away.

Have A Lot of Junk? Rent a Dumpster

Full service junk removal trucks hold about 14 cubic yards, or just “yards”, on average. Compared to dumpsters which come in four main sizes: 10 yards, 20 yards, 30 yards, and 40 yards. If you’re unfamiliar with yardage, 14 yards is about 3 to 4 pickup loads worth of debris. So if you have more junk than that you’ll find yourself having to pay for additional trip charges.

Generally if you more than 7 yards, 1 to 2 pickup truck loads, a dumpster rental will be the more cost effective option. Dumpster rental pricing becomes the more cost effective option if you have more to throw away, while junk removal adds additional labor costs.

On the flip side, if you only have a few yards of waste than a junk removal service will be the better option. With the smallest dumpster size being 10 yards you’ll end up paying for more dumpster than you need.

Weight Restrictions

Dumpster rentals do come with weight restrictions. These restrictions are based on local regulations and landfill fees in your area. If your loaded container exceeds the assigned weight limit, you’ll be charged additional fees.

While junk removal services don’t have overage fees, they are restricted by the legal weight limit of the truck. Legally they cannot overload the truck passed its max capacity and will have to dump the current load and return for the rest. This may result in additional labor charges. This should be discussed in the initial quote.

Remove Junk Around Your Schedule

With a dumpster rental you are in control of when the dumpster is filled and typically have between 7 and 14 days to fill it. The container will stay at your property for the duration of the rental, making it ideal if you have a lot of material or are doing an ongoing project.

If you want your junk gone as quickly as possible, a junk removal service is the way to go. Typically allotting for two hours per property they will load up the truck and be out of your way in no time.

Don’t Want to Lift More Than A Finger? Hire a Junk Removal Service

With a junk removal service you never have to lift more than a finger. Simply point to what you want gone, and POOF! It’s out of your house. A junk removal service takes care of everything for you. They’ll carry the junk out of your home and load the truck. The work is done for you regardless if the junk is in the attic, basement, yard, or wherever.

Junk removal experts are best for large bulky items, and anything that two people can move. They will also clean up your yard, construction debris, or whatever else you need disposed of. If you have only a few heavy items, don’t risk hurting yourself trying to load a dumpster. Allow professionals to take care of it for you.

Dumpster Rental vs Junk Removal Pricing

Dumpster rentals and junk removal services use different methods of pricing. While both charge for the service they provide and then the dump costs, how they go about obtaining a quote is very different.

Dumpster Rental Pricing

When you rent a dumpster you will normally get the full price upfront, over the phone or online. You get an idea what your final bill will look like. Pricing includes the service fee as well as the allotted dump limit pricing. You will also receive the overage pricing, which is the fee if you load more than the ton limit. Overage pricing is typically prorated, but be sure to ask.

At Alliance Disposal we provide you with the total cost to rent the dumpster, including sales tax and dump fees in your quote to avoid any unwanted surprises on your bill. If you are getting a quote from another company make sure you ask what the tax and additional fees are.

Dumpster rental pricing is highly dependent on your location. Different areas have different taxes and landfill dump rates, which are the main pricing factors.

To illustrate this point, below is a pricing table for national U.S. pricing and roll-off container pricing in New Jersey

Dumpster SizeU.S. National AverageNew Jersey Average
10 yard$300$509
20 yard$400$614
30 yard$475$714
40 yard$525$817

Junk Removal Service Pricing

With junk removal services you typically don’t get upfront pricing over the phone or online. It is highly dependent on how much junk you have, and if it is more than a few items you’ll typically get the quote in person.

Pricing can range anywhere from $50 to $750, depending on how close the service provider is to you, how much material you have, and how long it takes them to clean-out your property. With the national average being between $135 to $357. The quoted price typically does not include the dump fee, which you will receive after your waste has been properly disposed of. Most companies will try to recycle or donate whatever they can, which helps keep your dump bill low.

If you only have a few items most junk removal providers have minimum pricing you can ask for. This ranges anywhere from $50 to $139 depending on the item and your location. You’ll also receive different pricing for different types of materials. Concrete, brick and other heavy materials are more expensive to dispose of.

Other Considerations

Delivery and Permitting

If you don’t have a lot of space at your property, getting a dumpster delivered may be difficult. Event though the small 10 yard dumpsters are short, the truck still needs room to back in and drop the dumpster. On the other hand, a junk removal service which typically has a small dump truck, the size of a standard van, that can pull in and out easily.

When a dumpster is delivered it has the potential to damage your property when it is lowered. With most quality companies this is a rare occurrence, but is something to take into consideration. At Alliance Disposal we always place wood under the dumpster before lowering it. This helps prevent any damage from occurring. Make sure you ask your dumpster rental provider to do the same.

If you don’t have any room on your driveway or property for a dumpster or truck to park, they’ll have to use the street. With a junk removal service this won’t be an issue. They can park on the street to load and easily move the vehicle if needed. However, with a dumpster you may need a permit to place a dumpster in the street. It depends on your towns regulations. You can contact Alliance Disposal to see if you need a permit for your town.

Prohibited Items

Both dumpster rental and junk removal services have lists of items that cannot be taken. Dumpster rentals are restricted by what they can and can’t dump in a landfill. To see a full list of items checkout our What Can and Can’t I Throw In a Dumpster Guide.

While junk removal services have the same restrictions with landfills, some of them are able to accept the items because they’ll sort your junk. At Alliance Disposal we sort your junk to recycle and donate as much as possible. For example items like refrigerators with freon are not allowed in landfills, but using a junk removal service the freon can be properly disposed of and the refrigerator recycled. Most junk removal companies will not take items that require more than two people to lift, though.

Whether you choose to rent a dumpster or hire a junk removal service, be sure to ask what their “do not take” items are.

Free Junk Removal ???

Some municipalities offer free or discounted bulk removal service on certain days of the month. The catch is that you have to bring all the items to the curb. The municipality’s workers will not remove them from your house for you. If you only have a few items that you don’t mind carrying out to the curb, this would be the most affordable option for you.
